Aims
The Design and Technology curriculum at Staveley CE Primary has been thoughtfully designed to fulfil the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum with our Christian vision at the heart. Our Design and Technology curriculum provides clear skills and knowledge progression and aims to help children develop the abilities needed to become self-regulated learners, critical thinkers and confident individuals. At Staveley CE School, we want to foster children’s creativity and imagination to design and make products to solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and other’s needs, wants and values. We want to aid children to develop the practical expertise, skills and knowledge as well as the ability to critique and test their work within a caring environment. Design and Technology is a universal and fully inclusive subject that enables all children to express their individual gifts and talents. Lessons are fun and creative and are the perfect way for our children to embrace challenge and understand that there are no limits to their creativity.

What do we teach in Design and Technology?
Our scheme of work provides children with a broad range of experiences and opportunities to enable them to engage with design and technology. Due to mixed year groups, Design and Technology is taught on a rolling programme, and in all classes once a week as an individual subject, alternating with Art and Design, each half term. When possible it is incorporated into other curriculum lessons to enrich them. Each weekly lesson includes the opportunity for children to expand their knowledge and skills development and includes the opportunity for children to build on previous learning. These lessons where and when appropriate, are also linked to each class’ topics and planned to suit class interests or current events.
Teaching styles and available resources are taken into consideration. Through class lessons, we offer children a wide range of experiences to enable them to engage with Design and Technology. We encourage the children to experiment with their own ideas and, across the key stages, develop the technical knowledge and skills needed to be able to design, make and evaluate a product. We ensure all pupils have access to a range of good quality resources and materials, helping them to achieve their full potential and allowing for varied, individual outcomes.
Cooking and nutrition form a valued part of our Design and Technology learning journey. As part of their work with food, pupils are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. As well as developing a love of cooking, and how to cook and feed themselves, we provide children with the opportunity to explore the process of food production and food affordability. Skills and knowledge that can have a positive impact on their later life.
Impact
Our Design and Technology curriculum has been planned to show a sequenced progression of knowledge and skills, which ensures that children can build on their understanding, as each new concept and skill is taught. Opportunities are provided for children to revisit skills and knowledge as they progress through school while developing a love and interest in the subject. Children will have developed the skills and knowledge necessary to make healthy, responsible choices, which will have a lasting and positive impact on their future health and those around them. Our school vision of embracing loving one another as Jesus loved us, begins with us learning how we can care for ourselves and then using this empowerment to make a positive change in the world around us, in a loving and caring way.
