During their time at Staveley School every child has the opportunity to take part in at least three residential visits involving nights away from home. These form a progressive build up starting from one night away in Year 3 and leading to a  full week away in Y6. These visits are fundamental parts of the education of children at Staveley and help to build their self confidence, maturity and knowledge of the world. Long after they leave the school, these times are the ones that the children remember and the one that in many cases affect them most.

In Y3, when the children are 7 they take part in a single night away from home with two days of activities. Currently we go to Birdoswald, a residential centre right on the Roman Wall and built on the site of a Roman Fort. The children visit the wall, enjoy history related activities and for many, spend their first night away from home. This trip usually takes place early in the Autumn term.

In Y4 or Y5 (occasionally both) the children spend two nights away at one of the Cumbria Outdoor Centres. These are situated at Hawse End on Derwentwater and Fellside near Caldbeck. Both centres are fully accredited and run by the Local Authority, operating as Cumbria Outdoors. These residentials both feature a range of Outdoor and Adventure activities and typically include Sailing, Canoeing, Caving, Climbing, Abseiling and Archery. View the PowerPoint presentation used on the information evening here. This trip, which takes place in the summer term, (usually June), is offered initially to Y5 pupils. If any places are not taken up they are offered to Y4. This means that while every child has the opportunity to go in Y5, some will go twice in Y4 and Y5. In light of this, the venues alternate between Hawse End and Fellside to ensure that children do not repeat the same trip.

Y6 usually spend a week (3/4 nights) away from home in York. We stay at a specialist school residential Centre called Huntington House.

This is located just outside the city walls and provides a perfect base for exploring the city on foot. While in York we visit a selection from, the Minster, Ghost Walk, Yorvik, The Dig, Railway Museum, Castle Museum, Yorkshire Wheel, Minster Education Centre and also arrange evening visits from historical presenters. The trip takes place early in the Autumn term and parents are welcome to pay in instalments from the summer term preceding.
